    Monthly Goals: February

January was a really great month. It had its ups and downs just like any other month, but overall it was really nice. The weather wasn’t anywhere near as cold as January usually is, which I think helped my mood out a lot. I can say going into February though that I feel like I have finally transitioned over into being used to “working from home”. It was a little bit of a bumpy ride trying to find a nice groove again, but I feel really encouraged and happy with where I’m currently at. So let’s take a look at how I did on my January goals, shall we? 🙂

    • Workout 2-3x per week – Nope, but I will keep adding this to my goals until it happens!
    • Read two books I’m kind of cheating on this one, but I am ALMOST finished with the two books, and I definitely carved out way more time to read this month than I normally do so I’m counting that as a win!
    • Spend time with God every day I need to work on staying on track on the weekends, but I’m pretty proud of myself overall. I just finished the book of Isaiah today.
    • Complete the Wife After God Devotional While I still do have a few days left, I spent almost every day in January going through this study and it’s been awesome.
    • Clean out the bedroom closet YES. I finally had the time to get to this and it has made all the difference. I talked about it in this post if you’re interested.
    • Journal more Having more time in the mornings has definitely helped me with this one.
    • Blog at least 2-3x a week Yay, I’m super happy to say that since I announced that I am blogging full-time, I have stuck to posting Monday-Friday!
    • Celebrate mine and Tommy’s birthday See post here.
    • Take more baths

Not too bad! I will admit that I stretched a few of those to say that they were actually completed but I am really learning to give myself some grace lately and realize that not everything is going to be perfect. I’m learning to be okay with that!

    February Goals

    • Celebrate our first married Valentines Day!
    • Read two books
    • Clean out the pantry
    • Clean out our drawers
    • Finish crocheting the blanket I’m working on
    • Consistently blog Monday-Friday
    • Pray for Tommy every day
    • Create a cleaning schedule
    • Create a blogging schedule for the month
    • Workout 2-3x’s per month
    • Get used to waking up at 7 am

I’m feeling hopeful this month. I’m a little worried about the working out goal but I really need to get into a habit of working out so there it is. Maybe this will be the lucky month that I actually stick to it. 😉 I need all of your helpful workout tips! I’m linking up with Autumn for #MonthlyGold. Come join us!

What are your goals for February?

    Our Birthday Recap

As I’ve mentioned here before, mine and Tommy’s birthdays are just one day apart. His is January 21st and mine is January 22nd. It’s been a fun three years as we have gotten to have two full days of celebration together. This year I wanted to recap our birthdays to have it here for memories mostly, but also so you can peek into our lives and learn a little bit more about us. We are both admittedly introverts so low-key, simple birthdays are usually how we celebrate and honestly is all that we both really want. I debated on not doing this also because I don’t have pictures from either day (blogger fail, I know), but both days were special and fun so I think that will be enough to keep you entertained, whoever may be reading this. 😉 Oh and this year both our birthdays fell on the weekend so that was extra special and fun!

    Saturday, Tommy’s Birthday

A picture from our first birthdays together three years ago

Saturday morning we slept in a little bit because we stayed up until midnight (which is very unlike Tommy), mostly so I could wish Tommy a happy birthday when it turned twelve. We woke up and I made us one of Tommy’s favorite breakfasts, Acai Bowls. Then we spent a lot of the day just relaxing, watching Parenthood, our new favorite show. We had it planned to go out and buy Tommy a pair of shoes (my birthday present to him), so we headed off to the mall around three.

We unfortunately didn’t find any shoes that Tommy liked, except for one pair but the store didn’t have his size. The mall we were at had a Michael’s (craft store), near it so we went to that afterward because I wanted to see if they had any porcelain paint.

After that I had planned for us to go to a skate park because we were experiencing abnormally high temperatures for New Jersey in January, and Tommy’s favorite thing to do is really anything active, and he loves skateboarding. He also had just gotten a new skateboard for Christmas. So we drove to a skate park and he got to skate around while I set in the car and watched vlogs (lol).

    SOURCE

Once we headed back home I made Tommy one of his favorite meals, Sweet and Sour Chicken (pictured above), and a yummy dessert that we had made before and he really liked. It was a nice and quiet day, but was still really fun. Oh and right before we fell asleep, I had checked the website of the store where we had found the shoes that he liked and ordered them in his size! He was really excited.

    Sunday, My Birthday

A picture of us from my birthday last year

On my birthday we woke up somewhat early to go to church. Right when we woke up Tommy gave me my present. (He was super excited about it since he bought it.) There was a pretty good reason why he was too because he bought me a digital camera! Best. gift. ever. I’ve been wanting one probably ever since I was little but even more so now so I can take nice pictures for my blog. Oh and I have to share the first picture I took with my camera of course! (Sorry it’s blurry, he moved.)

    so cute 🙂

So anyway after I opened up my gift we got ready and had it planned to go to a new church to see how we liked it. We drove there for the first time and loved it. It is much smaller than the church we attend normally so we decided that we were going to go back the following week and see how we liked it a second time (but are pretty sure we are going to switch to this church).

After church, we went home and hung out. I played with my new camera and watched more vlogs, while Tommy watched videos on his computer. For dinner we went to Olive Garden and had a really nice dinner together. It had been a while since we had gone out to dinner so it was extra special. It was a really nice first married birthday.

So that’s what we did on our birthdays. They were nice and quiet days, getting to do things that we really enjoyed doing. What more could we ask for! How do you prefer to celebrate your birthday? Going all out? Or something simple and quiet like us?

What’s Up Wednesday: January 2017 Edition

Hi friends! I know that this is very similar to my currently post yesterday, but I’ve been wanting to get back into posting regularly for What’s Up Wednesday so I’m going to start this month (and try not to duplicate too much information from yesterday), and continue on with this series every last Wednesday of each month.

    WUW Questions

    What we’re eating this week:

This past week has been a lot of bad eating habits, but in our defense it was our birthdays this weekend! We also have been eating very heavy meals, I guess because it’s been cold out and we have been just wanting some comfort food. Either way, I’m hoping to jump back on the healthy eating train and really work on cleaning up our diet a little bit more over this next week or two.

    What I’m reminiscing about:

Always, always reminiscing about our tropical vacations when we’re in the cold, dreary months of winter. What I wouldn’t do to hop on a plane and be back in the Bahamas or the Dominican right now!

    What I’m loving:

All the freeeeedom I have now that I’m not working full-time. It’s been so fun to be able to plan whatever I’d like into my day without worrying about being too tired or busy to really get done what I need to get done around the house. I’m also really loving having more time to spend cooking and cannot wait to really dive into it and cook more nutritious meals.

    What we’ve been up to:

Celebrating a lot this month! We celebrated our birthdays this past weekend (like I mentioned yesterday) and our 8 month anniversary on my birthday. I plan to write a post just about what we did to celebrate this week so keep a heads up for that if you’re interested!

    What I’m dreading:

I’m not really dreading anything at the moment, which is a great thing!

    What I’m working on:

Learning how to post consistently here! It’s been tough keeping a Monday-Friday schedule but it’s stretching me and teaching me more about discipline too. I’m hoping to continue to push myself slightly out of my comfort zone and write about things that I think will be helpful to others, like marriage advice that I’ve learned.

    What I’m excited about:

Just the season of life that we are in. It comes with a lot of freedom and flexibility and I’m really learning how to just enjoy the season instead of wishing things were different. There are of course some hard things, as there is with any thing, but I’m really trying to just enjoy and focus on this season because all too soon it will be over before I know it.

I mentioned this yesterday too but I’m really excited about doing more research to open up an Etsy shop. The first thing I want to work on is this awesome mug. What’d you guys think?

    What I’m watching/reading:

As I mentioned yesterday I’m reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and For The Love and I’m really enjoying both of them. I just need to devote more time to actually reading instead of working on the computer.

We’ve also been watching Parenthood and it’s such a great show. Easily one of my all time favorites, and were only on Season 2!

    What I’m listening to:

Honestly not much since I don’t even really drive all that much and that was when I would normally listen to music. Sometimes I’ll put on music when I’m cleaning or doing the dishes but for the most part it doesn’t really cross my mind.

I have been wanting to get into Podcasts though so let me know of some suggestions!

    What I’m wearing:

Lots and lots of comfy clothes since I’m home most of the time now. I actually really need to go shopping for something nicer than sweatpants, but not quite as nice as I needed to dress in the corporate world so I have things to wear without staying in my pajamas all day.

    What I’m doing this weekend:

Honestly not the slightest clue. Maybe we’ll plan to have some friends over since it’s been a while since we’ve done that!

What I’m looking forward to next month:

    SOURCE

Our first married Valentines Day! We don’t usually go big for Valentines Day or anything but since it’s our first one married I’m sure we’ll do something. Maybe we’ll order a heart-shaped pizza! I’ve seen some people do that and it seems like so much fun!

    What else is new:

Transitioning over to being a stay at home wife this month was huge. There have been some ups and downs but I’m still very much excited about the newness of it. Tommy and I have had so much more free time together and it’s been great. We’ve actually have had two unexpected days of him being off due to a holiday or the weather and we’ve gotten to spend all day during the week together so it’s been super fun!

What’s up with you guys? I’m linking up with Shay, Shaeffer, and Mel for What’s Up Wednesday!

    Currently, January

    This post contains affiliate links.

Reading// I am currently rereading the Harry Potter series and am on book one, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. I’m also reading For the Love by Jen Hatmaker, which is a really light, funny read and am really enjoying it. I’ve also been reading plenty of blogs of course! (Probably spending most of my time doing this over the books.)

Watching// Tommy and I just recently finished How I Met Your Mother, and just started watching Parenthood after seeing many people talk about how good it is. I’m really enjoying it. It’s a nice show to sit down to at the end of your day.

Trying// To really stay on top of my household chores this week. I usually put them off until I absolutely have to do them, but then I end up doing 5 loads of laundry at once, or cleaning the entire house in only one day, and this just wears me out and I’m usually dead for at least the next day or so. So instead of that, this week I’m trying to do one small thing each day, like today I cleaned the bathroom. Let’s hope I stick to it the rest of the week.

Cooking// This past weekend I cooked Sweet and Sour Chicken for Tommy’s birthday. It’s one of his favorite meals. It’s definitely different from what I normally cook so it was fun to do something special for his birthday.

    SOURCE

Eating// Extra light today because my stomach has been feeling kind of funny. Although last night we went out to Olive Garden and I had my favorite, 5 Cheese Baked Ziti. Yum. Tonight we had chicken soup!

Drinking// Homemade sweet tea! So delish. I’ve also been drinking lots of hot tea today too.

Pinning// New, yummy recipes. I love getting dinner recipes from Pinterest.

Going// To start planning our vacation to Florida soon! My cousin called me and asked if I’d be interested in taking a vacation to visit my grandparents when she has spring break so that’s what we’ll be doing in April and I am so excited. We are definitely going to plan on going to the beach at least once during the week because come on, just look at how nice the beaches are in Florida!

    SOURCE

Loving// All the free time Tommy and I have now that I’m not working full-time. It’s been great spending so much time with him without the stress of having to worry about when I’m going to get everything done.

Hating// That adjustment periods can be really tough sometimes. As much as I love getting to stay home and work, it does come with getting used to it, and I am struggling a bit some days.

Discovering// New vlogs! I’ve been watching Blair’s vlog and am loving it. I also want to try to find other’s vlog’s as well. I’m finding them to be so fascinating. Let me know if you know of any good ones!

Thinking// About a lot of things. I’ve been thinking a lot about the changes in our life and deciding how I feel about them.

Feeling// Hopeful. Even though I may be feeling a little lost because of the huge transition from working full-time to staying home, I am hopeful that I will get used to it and love it. Tommy prayed for me about this at dinner tonight and it really helped.

Hoping// That spring would hurry up and get here. Although I really can’t complain about the weather. It’s been such a mild winter this year. I just really can’t wait to be able to do things outside again.

Listening// I’m really excited to start listening to Podcasts. I have a few lined up that I think I’m going to love. I just need to find when is the best time for me to do it. Maybe daily as I work on those household chores that I’m trying to commit to! That should help keep me on track.

Celebrating// Mine and Tommy’s birthdays!! Tommy’s was Saturday and mine was Sunday, and they were a lot of fun. It was also our eight month anniversary on Sunday too. We’ve had lots to celebrate this month!

Smelling// The slight lingering odor of bleach. Yuck! I accidentally bought a shower cleaner with bleach, and would normally never use bleach to clean. But I was all out of shower cleaner and I figured it couldn’t be that bad, but boy was I wrong! Our apartment is very small and there is barely any ventilation, and absolutely none in the bathroom. So what that meant was that the entire apartment smelled so strongly of bleach we actually had to leave for an hour because it was so awful and killing our heads. The tub is now sparkly but that is the first and last time I clean with bleach. #nothankyou.

Ordering// My Young Life Essential Oils starter pack soon!!

Thanking// God every day for this life that he has so greatly blessed me with. I don’t think I’ll ever get over how much he has blessed me.

Considering// Starting an Etsy shop with hand painted coffee mugs (like this one below) and maybe eventually t-shirts! I really hope this happens!

    SOURCE

Starting// Thinking about how to actually start the Etsy shop and what supplies I need for it.

What are you up to, currently?

    My 25th Birthday Wish List

I’ve never done a post like this but figured it’s as good a time as any since my 25th birthday is on Sunday. I honestly almost completely forgot about my birthday this year. I feel like after you turn 21, there really isn’t much of a change anymore. But still, this is my first birthday as a married woman so it is still exciting!

Since working from home, I have had a lot more time to read new blogs and just research more things in general. Most of these wish list items have actually come from doing just that. I have been able to learn more about health and wellness. I’ve also learned that I have a desire to learn how to do my hair differently, and even try some makeup tutorials.

    My Wish List Items

      • Miraqueen – I saw this on a new blogger that I recently came across, Blair and I watched her tutorial on how to use it and it and it just makes the most perfect curls. I really want to learn how to do more things to my hair so I think this is a great start.
      • Essential Oils Young Living Starter Pack – Of course everyone has heard of essential oils at this point, but I have been wanting to look more into them for the past year or so. I finally took a leap and took an online class over the past few days and I am hooked and have not even tried them yet! I can’t wait to get a starter pack.
      • Personalized Notebook – I just came across this the other day as well. I just got the Simplified Planner by Emily Ley for Christmas and this notebook matches the planner. I have been wanting to get a newer, more personalized notebook, but I have been writing in one for the past year and can’t justify spending money on a new one until the one I’m writing in fills up. But if someone bought it for me for a present then it’d be more than fine! 😉
      • Blanket Scarf – I’ve always, always loved this pattern. I saw a scarf just like this before Christmas at Target and loved it. I absolutely adore scarfs in the colder months, they just keep me so warm. I haven’t bought a new scarf in a while though and this one is right up my alley.
      • The Magnolia Story – I found the show Fixer Upper on Netflix probably about 6 months ago and absolutely fell in love with Chip and Joanna. They’re just too cute and are so awesome at what they do. Then I found out they were Christians and I knew I just had to read their book when it came out. I had this one on my Christmas list as well.
      • DSLR Camera – I’ve always been interested in photography, and actually wanted to take a class in high school but never actually did. I think it’d be so much fun to have a real camera and learn how to use it. I just wish they weren’t so expensive.

I honestly usually have no idea what I want for my birthday or for Christmas when someone asks me. I’m surprised I was even able to make a list like this, haha. Guess I’ll have to send it out to my family now, since for once I actually know what I want! 😉

What is still on your wish list from Christmas?
Have you made a birthday list yet for this year? What’s on it?

7 Natural Ways To Clear Up Sensitive Skin

Ever since I was a teenager I’ve struggled with acne. During those hormone-filled years, it was much worse than it was once I entered my 20’s, but still, I had acne in my 20’s! I remember being 15 and thinking to myself I can’t wait to not be a teenager because obviously then my acne will go away. But nope. I’ll be 25 on Sunday, and I can finally now say that I have a handle on how to take care of my skin. I thought I’d share what works for me, in hopes I can help someone else too.

How I Used To Hide My Skin When Taking Pictures

But before we dive in I want to show you pictures of me from 2013. I was trying to find a picture of how bad my acne was a few years ago but I of course would not have allowed myself to take a real picture of my skin back then. So instead I will show you how I used to take pictures to strategically hide how bad my skin actually was. (And then at the end of the post, I’ll share what my skin looks like now, for real, without hiding anything.)

These were the only types of pictures I would allow of myself on the internet. The light had to be perfectly hitting my face so that you couldn’t see my skin clearly at all, (I would often take pictures right in front of the window to have that effect), like in the picture to the left. Or I would so heavily edit the picture, like on the right, that you could never tell what my skin actually looked like. So as you can see, my skin was not something I was proud of. But I’ve come a long way and have finally found what works for my skin. The secret is that I have very sensitive skin, which means that I need to treat it as such, even when dealing with acne.

7 Steps To Clearer, Healthier Skin

This post contains affiliate links. This means that the price of the item won’t change for you, but I receive a small commission of the sale if you choose to buy. Thanks for your support!

    1 | Use a Natural Face Wash

This step is my secret weapon. I used to use Proactiv and it would work for a while then all of a sudden out of nowhere it seemed my skin would just start breaking out like crazy and for the longest time I could never figure out why it worked for so long and then would just stop. I eventually figured out why and it was because the harsh products that were used in Proactiv would eventually dry out my skin so much that it would make me to break out even more. That’s when I switched to Yes to Tomatoes Detoxifying Charcoal Cleanser and my face almost instantly cleared up. This is an all-natural product that doesn’t have harsh ingredients to dry out my skin. It naturally cleans skin. I was amazed at how clean my skin felt after using this for the first time. It’s like your skin can actually breathe again. I’ve yet to find another product that has given me great results like this one and I really believe that anyone with sensitive skin that also struggles with acne would greatly benefit from giving this product a try!

I generally just wash my face with this before I go to sleep. If I’m going through a period where my skin is acting up more than usual, I will wash my face in the morning and at night. Just be careful not to dry out your skin too much. If using it twice a day dries out your skin too much, only use it once a day or see Step 2!

    2 | Use a Non-scented Moisturizer

This is especially important in the dry winter months. When our skin gets too dry, it cracks and lets bacteria in, which leads to breakouts. So the only way to fix this is to moisturize. I use Jergens Soothing Aloe, which works great for me. I used to put it on both morning and night but my dermatologist told me that it was only necessary to use once a day. (Unless you have very dry skin, then use it twice a day until you see improvement, then switch back to once a day.) This is definitely not the only moisturizer that you can use. My dermatologist actually had me using Lubriderm, then I switched to Jergens once it ran out. Any will work, just make sure it is unscented! The scented kind can make you breakout more.

3 | Drink Lots and Lots of Water

This may seem like one of the hardest tips to believe, but it really does make a difference! Drinking more water has changed a lot of things for me over the past year too. It has given me more energy, and has definitely helped in clearing up my skin. When we drink the water that our bodies need, we give them what it needs to flush out the toxins that can cause breakouts. (I’ve linked an article that explains it with more detail if you’re interested.)

    4 | Drink A Skin Detox Tea

This is another one of my favorite tips. I absolutely love tea. Almost as much as I love coffee. I usually drink anywhere from 1-3 cups of tea a day, so when I found this tea I was thrilled! Yogi Skin DeTox Tea really helped to start flushing out the extra toxins in my skin, and helped to keep me hydrated as well! Yogi Tea is my favorite brand because it has all natural ingredients, which is so important to me. I drink at least two other flavors by them as well and they are so good! The taste for this particular tea isn’t amazing or anything but it’s definitely not bad. You can even have it iced. I’ve read reviews for it on Amazon and saw that some people prefer it that way. I preferred mine hot though!

I don’t currently drink this now but if my skin tends to have a period where it is acting up more than usual, I will generally pick up a box and have 1-2 cups a day. You can drink up to 3 cups for 30 days.

5 | Change Your Pillow Case Often

This is especially important if you use product in your hair. This is something that I need to really be careful about. I use gel in my hair every day, and what happens is when I sleep, the gel comes off and goes onto my pillow. And since I have such sensitive skin, when I’m sleeping on it all night, the gel causes my face to breakout. When I found this out I was so shocked. It was not something that I would have ever thought to do myself, but it makes so much sense! You might want to change your pillowcase at least once a week, if not every day in the beginning, just to ensure that your skin stays clean overnight.

    6 | De-Stress

Sometimes life just gets to be really stressful. Whether I’m just dealing with daily stress or if I’m dealing with the stress surrounding a major life change, stress always affects my skin and how prone to breaking out I am. When I was planning my wedding, my skin was the worst it had been in years. Which was really unfortunate because it did not clear up until after our wedding, but that just proved to me how much stress affected my skin. Sometimes we can’t help being stressed out but what I’ve found can really help is working out. Whether that be just walking a mile every day or going to the gym for hours, just do what’s comfortable for you. It will definitely help improve your skin because sweating gets out the toxins out too!

If working out is just not an option for you, try other ways to de-stress. Take a bath. Read a book. Write in a journal. Listen to some music. Pray. Just do your best to de-stress anyway that works for you!

    7 | Eat More Fruits + Vegetables

    SOURCE

I know, I know, we don’t need another reason to eat fruits and vegetables and I’m sure you already know this, but I needed to include it because it really does help! Eating fruits and vegetables gives our bodies the resources they need to detoxify our skin. The antioxidants in fruits and vegetables fight against inflammation, repair scar tissue, and also repairs sun damage.

I try to eat fruits and vegetables every day. One way I try to add extra fruit in is to make acai bowls! I really try to have vegetables with dinner as well, and try to plan our meals around whole, real foods, which add antioxidants to our diets.

What My Skin Looks Like Now

As you can see, my skin is not perfect, but it is very clear. These steps really do work, but I will admit that I  still do struggle with breakouts every once in a while. If I happen to get very stressed, I will usually breakout more than usual. But these steps have really helped to fight back against my acne and have given me so much more confidence. I really hope they work for you too! Let me know if you try any and what you think/if they worked!
